Anbar Confirms 600 Million Tons of High-Purity Silica

Anbar Confirms 600 Million Tons of High-Purity Silica

The News

Geological experts from Anbar University reported in January 20 that the Anbar desert contains approximately 600 million tons of proven silica sand reserves, with projected totals reaching one billion tons.

These deposits exhibit a naturally occurring purity level of 98% to 99%, a rarity that allows for high-tech applications without the complex industrial processing required in other nations.

Why It Matters

The high purity and low iron oxide content (0.1%) of Anbar’s silica make it a world-class asset suitable for the semiconductor, solar panel, and precision glass industries. Unlike traditional oil and gas projects, these surface-accessible deposits offer lower extraction complexity and higher potential for vertical integration into downstream manufacturing like flat glass and electronics.

The renewed interest in Silica production was evident in the April 2025 strategic cooperation agreement between Iraq’s Ministry of Industry and Minerals and the Saudi-based Ajial Company. The agreement is aimed to establish the country's largest integrated industrial complex in Anbar Province by launching a wide range of downstream manufacturing projects.

The Hurdles

However, the transition from raw resource to economic asset faces severe structural headwinds. Persistent security instability in Anbar since 2003 has historically stifled industrial sustainability. This environment is further complicated by bureaucratic hurdles and an outdated 1988 Mineral Investment Law. Furthermore, the lack of dedicated rail and road infrastructure to transport bulk silica from the landlocked western desert to export terminals in Basra remains a primary deterrent for large-scale foreign investment.

Bottom Line

While the resource quality is globally competitive, the project's viability depends on the Iraqi government's ability to transition from selling raw materials to establishing integrated industrial zones. Thus, it is critical to watch how the cooperative agreement with the Saudi Ajial Company progresses.
